they're finding facts and critics say it is all about finding fault with the obama administration with 27 days left until the presidential election. so the goal of this hearing, again, live pictures, is to learn what exactly happened in benghazi, in libya, in the months before and the day of this september 11th attacks in these two compounds. the u.s. consulate there on the left, and also that safe house just about half a mile away. you know the story. four americans killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens, foreign service officer shawn smith and security officers glen doherty and ty woods. the chair of the government committee that initiated this hearing opened up by saying the state department was, quote, coming clean as it released new details just last night. those details include officials saying that attack at the consulate in benghazi was impossible to defend. and today, a regional security officer testified the assault was something the united states had never seen before at a diplomatic outpost. >> i had not seen an attack of such ferocity and intensity previously in libya.

as when we started. if you go back four years ago the month that the obama/biden administration was sworn into office we lost 720,000 jobs. and people talk about the recovery act but the month the recovery act passed, we hit bottom in terms of jobs, we now created 5.1 million new jobs. the other thing, becky, and you know the stock market, what was the month that the stock market hit bottom and started up again, the month we passed the stimulus bill. we have a long way to go. what's amazing to me, we have taken a major attack to our heart, second worst economic crisis since -- the first since the great depression and you just don't walk away from that and i think that we're still going away but i think this administration has done a lot and frankly when you look at what the governor and the congressman are promoting it's the same thing that really got us into this thing in the first place. >> senator, we have erskine bowles and alan simpson who are going to be interviewed by steve liesman today. >> yes, yes. >> what do you think about bowles-simpson and do you think it works its way into

think the vice president will be pretty direct in his comments about what the obama administration's plans are. he's going to have a tough time debating the record. we saw that last week with governor romney and president obama. when it actually got to the record they struggled a little bit. vice president is a confident debater. we look at debates historically, the older, more senior person often has the upper hand. not always but often. >> you're looking at a decent age gap between the two men. do you think age plays a factor in this? >> i think so. now it's a situation, is it going to be more reanesque or more john kennedy? if the younger guy is able to carry his own. i know paul ryan really well. he's a good friend of mine. this guy is smart and is experienced and he understands the numbers. >> congressman? >> he will do okay but will have his hands full. >> one of the things he's known for is specifics. and figures and data. one of the things that mitt romney hasn't been doing lately is filling in the data and giving specifics on his tax plan and budget plan. what kind of chal

obama. we did not agree on everything. i worked closely on the bush administration on a number of issues that put virginia first. railroads are being built right now largely because of president bush and his secretary of transportation and our ability to work together. we worked with the bush administration in the aftermath of the shootings at virginia tech. i will always be a partner of the nine states, whoever the president is. i also have a track record of working across lines. first, here in richmond. second, as a republican -- as a governor with republican houses. we were the best-managed state in virginia. revested for business all years i was governor, forbes magazine. those were not tim kaine accolades. those are things we did working together. when the president ask that i serve as the and seek share, i think i had my best year. we got smoking banned. all three publication ranked virginia the best place in the united states. we saw a huge improvements in infant mortality. we recruited numerous businesses in the heart of the recession to come to a virginia. rolls-royce opened a m

to put them in bankruptcy. we will never know an alternate history, but what the obama administration did not do is it created a series of programs designed to keep the impact of these bankruptcies to a minimum. gm for years had warned a bankruptcy, people would not buy cars, so they created a supplier support program, so suppliers would get paid, the government would ensure the suppliers which get paid, the factories would keep running, although the terms were onerous. they created a board to guarantee, where the president said we will ensure your warranties are honored. the key breakthrough in terms of getting these companies through was using 363, a provision, where the government came in with its brick force, a huge amount of money, and outbid everybody else with these assets. alternative plans, governor romney has said this could have been done privately and the government could have guaranteed the financing in bankruptcy. the real question that is hard to enter is could an alternative that did not use the section of the bankruptcy code -- the government said to the court we're makin
